Reading right now

So I’m only about 50 pages into Chadwick’s History of the Church volume 1 and I am astounded at the historical resonances and the ways in which the Christian Church developed since about 400. In these few short chapters I can already see how celibacy became a core issue, how a distrust in Gnosticism made the text central to belief and how bishops became so powerful in early medieval Europe. It’s like peeling back layers of wallpaper to see the tastes of others you will never meet.

It’s not all about the Commission on Taxation this morning you know.
